Highlights of this tour:
Bodrum is Turkey’s gateway to
world tourism, it is an unique
place – “ the land of eternal
blue “ according to Homer’s
words.
The history of Bodrum, known as
Halicarnassus or Halicarnassos
goes back to the 13th century
BC. Excavaties reveal the 5000
year old history of this town.
Many civilisations found their
home here. Heredotus, known as
the father of history, was born
in Bodrum in 484 BC.- and he
said that Bodrum had been
founded by the Dorians. The city
was the site of King Mausoleum's
Tomb 4. century B.C., one of the
Seven Wonders of the Ancient
World.
Today Bodrum has everything that
one would expect to find in a
vacation getaway. It is an
important tourist center in both
winter and summer time.

area has so far been completely
spared from large scale tourist
developments.

Mausoleum, the Castle and the
Museum of Underwater Archeology.

The Mausoleum is Bodrums oldest
antiquity and was built by
Artemisia II in honour of her
husband King Mausolos. It became
one of the wonders of the
ancient world, Mausoleum still
is the general term for a large
tomb. The entire structure stood
at over 50 meters in height. The
first reliefs from the Mausoleum
reached the British Museum in
London in 1846, these included
frescos and other objects.
The Crusader Castle was built by
the Knights of St. John between
1402 and 1409. After being
defeated in Symrna (The ancient
name of Izmir), the Knights came
to Halikarnassos and began the
construction of the castle.
Unknowingly, they used many
stones from the great tomb of
Mausolus. The knights referred
to the town as Mesy not knowing
that they where in the ancient
Halicarnassus. The fortress
became known as the Castle of
St. Peter, the Liberator, it
served as the sole place of
refugee for all Christians on
the West Coast of Asia during
the time of the crusades. For
over a century the castle served
as a stronghold in the knights
community.
Under Turkish care the castle
has undergone several uses
including being a military base,
a prison and a public bath
The Bodrum Museum of Underwater
Archaeology in The Bodrum Castle
of The Knights of St.John is not
just a dusty collection of
lifeless relics, it is an
original, creative and exiting
experience. It is a trip into a
fascinating past through to life
in exhibits that take you back
in time into the worlds of
ancient mariners who sailed to
meet their destiny shipwrecked
on Anatolian shores. The most
impressive is the Glass Hall
containing a spectacular cargo
of medieval glassware from an
11th century Islamic wreck
!
